Raw Food Detox

Raw Food Detox: How to Start

A raw food detox diet is a way to detoxify the body. If you do it well, it removes toxins or other contaminants that are stored in our body fat and cells. Detoxing improves health, energy, immune system, memory and digestion.

Warning

Most people are low in minerals such as: calcium, magnesium, sulfur, phosphor, sodium, iron. In order to detoxify, you need alkaline minerals. An important role of calcium is to aid in detoxification. It is an alkaline mineral and will “catch” the toxic acids that your body releases.

If the acids can’t be “bound” because your body lacks (alkaline) minerals, the chance is high that you will feel seriously ill during your detox, that your body refuses to release the toxins (you won’t be able to lose weight, since acids and toxins are often stored in your body fat), or that your body re-absorbs the released toxins again.

Alkalize

Therefore, it’s crucial that – before or during your detox – you get plenty of alkaline water, green vegetable juice and alkalizing super foods.

You may also replenish your minerals by adding a tablespoon of spirulina, blue green algae (i.e. from the “E3 Live” brand) or wheat grass powder in your alkaline drinking water. These have highly available amino acids and minerals. And they alkalize you.

Once you’ve re-mineralized your raw food detox will be much more effective and easier for your system to handle.

Tip

You may also want to get activated zeolites or bentonite clay. The zeolites especially, are incredibly effective in attaching themselves to toxins, making them harmless and guiding them out of your body. The tiny zeolites neutralize the most toxic elements from our body such as arsenic, mercury.

Clay is much cheaper and is fine too but usually not strong enough. These zeolites will help you get rid of the toxins in an easy, safe and effective way.  Highly recommended for use during the detox. Zeolites come in a tiny bottle and are pretty expensive, but I highly recommend them when you detox.

Also, I can’t stress enough, make sure that you drink enough alkaline water during the process and that you get enough rest.

Yah’some Living at it’s Best

To all of my doubters out there, a raw food lifestyle really does work. If you are still on the fence about starting your own 30 day raw food nutrition experiment, this lady may just be the nudge you need. I’ve sent it to a few of my friends and two have decided to go raw for 30 Days.

And now, the Raw Food Nutrition Plan Pros: Weight Loss.  Just about everyone I’ve met, who has gone on this nutrition plan, has lost weight. If you are trying to lose weight in a healthy way, then there is no healthier way than eating raw natural foods. I personally lost 35 lbs while on this nutrition plan and I wasn’t even trying. If you are trying to lose a few pounds, then try the raw food nutrition plan. Not only will you lose the weight but you will feel great while doing it. There’s no need for pills, powders, fancy diets, or set portions. That, plus zero cooking time! Just go to your local ‘Farmers Market‘ and buy the produce. Then come home, wash it, grab one of our deLightful recipes, prepare it, and eat it. I lost an average of 3.687 lbs in a week. If you eat a lot of processed food, as well as fast food you will probably lose more weight than me. Just keep in mind that if you eat processed food along with fast food on a daily basis, your detox period may also be more intense. With that in mind, you may not want to jump into 100% raw food all at once. I recommend a natural herbal detox kit.  If you do decide on eating 100% raw, then I recommend scheduling a nutritional consultation with one of our nutritional consultants today.

CACAO

Chocolate –in its pure form as CACAO– is actually one of the healthiest foods on the planet! Research is continually proving that Cacao is actually a superfood.

The health benefits of this wonderful superfood are not widely known. Although, everyone enjoys chocolate, people do not consume it in its raw form for the maximum benefit that they can derive from it. Raw Cacao is chocolate that has not gone through any sort of heating or processing, so all of the nutrients are still intact.

Unfortunately, the real problem today is that most chocolate has been highly processed and heated, destroying most of the nutrients. Furthermore, most chocolate today is loaded with sugars, dairy products, sodium, stabelizers, emulsifiers, preservatives, and more. Researchers have even found that commercial chocolate can be contaminated with extremely high quantities of the toxic metal lead. So, not only are the good things being taken out, bad stuff is being added, turning the cacao superfood into chocolate junk food.

For thousands of years, ancient Mayans, Aztecs and Incans have known about the amazing properties of Cacao and they used Cacao daily whether it be for meals, medicine, commerce, or religious ritual.

In fact, Cacao was held to be so sacred, that Incans used Cacao beans as money and filled their treasury holds with tons of Cacao beans.

Cacao is derived from Theobroma Cacao beans, which literally means “Food of the Gods”. Cacao contains over 300 compounds including: protein, fat, carbohydrates, fiber, iron, zinc, copper, calcium and magnesium. Magnesium helps to build strong bones and is a muscle relaxant associated with feelings of calmness. Cacao is also high in sulfur, which helps form strong nails and hair.

Cacao benefits

#1 food source of antioxidants – up to 5 times higher than the next highest source
#1 food source of magnesium – this mineral is the biggest deficiency in the Standard America Diet
Phenylethylamine (PEA) – the compound which scientists believe is released when you’re in love
Anandamide – the ‘bliss chemical’
Tryptophan – the precursor to serotonin
MAO Inhibitors – allows more serotonin to flow in your body
Appetite suppresant & aphrodisiac

None of the above statements have been evaluated by the FDA, although they told us they really love raw chocolate.

Alkaline and Food

Consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables has decreased giving rise to the Western acid-producing diet. Something or the other has to be done to control it otherwise the results will be too disastrous for us to imagine.

Now what is an alkaline diet?

What happens- When we eat, our food gets digested, absorbed, and metabolized, and then it releases either an acid or an alkaline base (bicarbonate) into our blood.

Alkaline levels in our body

Our blood is somewhat alkaline, consisting of a normal pH level between 7.35 and 7.45. An acidic diet disrupts this balance and encourages the loss of essential minerals like potassium, magnesium, calcium, and sodium, as the body tries to restore balance and this imbalance makes you prone to numerous chronic diseases.

If you have noticed the following symptoms in you, then alkaline diet is strongly recommended for you:

1. Lack of energy
2. Excessive mucous production
3. Nasal congestion
4. Frequent colds and flu
5. Anxiety, nervousness, irritability
6. Ovarian cysts, polycystic ovaries, benign breast cysts
7. Headache

Acidic Foods

1. Meats and oils
2. Jams
3. Butter
4. Cookies
5. Frozen foods
6. Ice creams
7. Cranberries
8. Wheat
And almost 90% of our food intake is acidic by nature.

Alkaline Foods

Alkaline diets prevent the formation of calcium kidney stones, osteoporosis, and age-related muscle wasting.

1. Almonds
2. Yogurt
3. Raw milk
4. Almond milk
5. Wheat grass
6. Germ grass
7. Honey
8. Herbal tea
9. All fruits except Cranberries
10. Melons and Cherries – highly alkaline
11. Lemon- Though sour in taste yet not acidifying- Lemonade made with stevia and sea salt is highly alkaline and very refreshing
12. Quinoa, Amaranth, Millet, Buckwheat (grains)- All other grains are highly acidic in nature and should not be taken.

Fruits and vegetables if eaten raw also provide a dual purpose of not only energy but also fiber. The heart, the brain, the blood cells, the liver, the kidney all require a body ph of 7.4 for a smooth and optimal functioning. Only an alkaline foods diet can insure that this natural alkaline body ph is restored. An alkaline foods diet is completely opposite to what most of us eat today.

The Greener The Vegetable, The More Alkaline

So when looking for alkaline vegetables, go for the greens like broccoli, asparagus, cabbage, wheat grass, lettuce, and so on are high alkaline foods and are highly beneficial to the body.

Vegetables like mushrooms, onions, peas, pepper bells, parsley, radish, cucumber, tomatoes, potatoes with their peels and garlic though not green vegetables are all the same alkaline foods.

But please stay miles away from the highly-acidic foods like animal flesh, processed food, eggplants, fats and even lentils. These acidic foods are really fatal for the body.

Wheat is an acidic food but wheat grass is alkaline.

Similarly raw spinach is alkaline by nature but if you cook it, it gets highly acidic. Milk is also alkaline but only if it is raw. All processed forms of dairy are acidic and are to be avoided.

Alkaline foods prevents diseases

Many chronic aliments like cancer, arthritis, osteoporosis, coronary diseases, migraines, dental problems, depressions, sinusitis, and many such seemingly common illnesses are the result of acidic foods diet that we are used to. Now, do you realize why we suffer from such problems throughout our lives.

Needless to say that when we follow an alkaline foods diet our bodies get alkalized and the acidic levels gets balanced out thus repelling all germs and strengthening the immune system.

For those who are inclined to non vegetarian diet meats are a clear no. For those looking for some protein there is chicken breast, which is alkaline and can be eaten for good health. Other meats are all acidic and should form no more the 20 % of ones diet.

WARNING-
Remember never to eat just alkaline foods, a bit of acid is also required for a balanced diet. the only thing is to keep your acidic food intake very limited.

Alkaline diet is recommended in different variations for different bodies. First go for a reliable source and purchase a pH balance kit. Measure your alkaline content and then go for the alkaline diet accordingly.

Whole Food Nutrition

Simply stated, I believe the best way to get optimal nutrition is to eat primarily whole, unprocessed, organic food. However, this is easier said than done–for many reasons which will be addressed here.

So the purpose of this briefing is to simply offer my best tips on how to maximize your time and dollars to get the best whole food nutrition that is unique to you and your health condition.

Every one of us has the same list of nutritional requirements (vitamins, minerals, trace elements, amino acids, enzymes and hormones), yet the right amounts for each individual are determined by our unique lifestyle, environment, metabolic type and blood type.

See our Simple 6-Step Process for Optimum Nutrition.

Illness or disease can result from both excesses and deficiencies of the required nutrients.  One of the most important factors I’ve learned about nutrition in my research as a Certified Nutrition Consultant is the importance of the synergistic effect of all nutrient components in food. The body in its infinite intelligence knows how to adjust imbalances if we give it whole foods rather than isolated nutrients in supplement form, especially the synthetic ones.

Along with intake of food, there are many other key factors related to nutrition, including the simple science of food combining, water intake, electrical nutrition, acid vs. alkaline benefits, removal of toxic waste, absorption of nutrients from the sun, digestive and eliminative health, and many others.

In addition, even though I maintain this whole-food philosophy, I have come to realize over time that high-quality, whole-food supplements are often necessary to complement our diets, especially when we don’t have access to high quality, fresh food. I also find that the situations in people’s lives make it challenging to consistently eat healthy meals. So I will be recommending some of my favorite whole-food nutritional supplements to fill in the gaps as we do our best to eat well.

Simple 6-Step Process for Optimum Nutrition

1.  Drink Enough Pure Water. Water is involved in every chemical and biological process in the body. To a large degree, your body’s hydration level determines how well it can digest and assimilate nutrients from the food you eat and any supplements you take.  If your body is even slightly dehydrated, it simply will not function well–no matter how well you eat. Thus, drinking at least 1/2 oz. per pound of body weight of pure alkaline water is the foundation for your optimum nutrition.

2.  Choose Quality Food. Start by going through your cupboards and giving away all processed food. Shop at your local farmers-type markets, the Lifestyles Wellness Market and the Pantry for fresh foods (preferably organic and locally grown) as often as possible. In grocery stores, shop the perimeter mainly for organic fresh (or frozen) foods and avoid all processed, packaged, fried, canned and fast food. Bottom line is if it’s not food, don’t eat it! Read the labels. I recommend eating primarily a whole-food, fruit and plant-based diet, especially an abundance of raw vegetables, fruits, seeds, nuts, along with whole grains, sprouted grains and legumes.

3.  Prepare Simple Meals. Let’s face it, if meals are not quick and easy, they’re not going to happen more often than not. Invest in a few natural health cookbooks and try one new simple recipe a week until you have at least 10 quick meals to fall back on when you’re stressed or just don’t feel like cooking. Look for recipes here at Yah’some Living in the recipe section we have great recipes that can make your life healthier and take no longer than 20 minutes. The easiest way I know to get in 9-11 servings of fruits and vegetables is by blending and drinking smoothies.  I can’t say enough about smoothies, especially with a high power blender.

4.  Digest Your Food Well. No matter how well you eat, if your food doesn’t digest properly, your body will not assimilate the nutrients and utilize the energy it needs. When the digestive and eliminative systems work well, energy levels are high and the immune system is strong. The key is to work from the top down, first ensuring good digestion, then good absorption, and finally good elimination. If your digestion or eliminations is poor, begin by hydrating your body. The second step is to slow down and chew your food thoroughly.

5.  Cleanse Your Colon. Did you know that 2-3 bowel movements a day is considered healthy? Many people feel lucky to have 2-3 a week! The most common sign of a toxic colon is chronic constipation or irritable bowel. The most effective ways to cleanse your colon naturally is by drinking alkaline water and fresh fruit and vegetable juices, eating a diet high in fiber and nutrients, and taking herbal colon cleansing products periodically. Taking extra flax seed fiber, probiotics (kefir is easy to make look at the kefir grains post here at Yah’some Living), or magnesium can also be helpful.

6.  Take Key Supplements as Needed. Even with the best food and a “balanced” diet, I have found that our food may still not provide all the nutrients we need. Unfortunately, the bulk of our food supply is processed and grown in nutritionally depleted soil. So unless you are growing your own food in rich soil, I believe a few key broad-based, whole-food supplements are advisable, especially during times when we are under more stress or strain.  Northern Edge Milled Flax Seed and Wheat Germ are two of  my favorites. Together they are a SUPER food, rich in omega 3, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fatty acids, sterols, flavonoids, carotenoids and proteins.

Remember if you are struggling with your health, your eating habits or other lifestyle factors, it is helpful (even necessary at times) to work with a health care professional or Certified Nutrition Consultant. Ultimately it can save you time and money, as well as physical and emotional discomfort.
