Raw Food Detox

Raw Food Detox: How to Start

A raw food detox diet is a way to detoxify the body. If you do it well, it removes toxins or other contaminants that are stored in our body fat and cells. Detoxing improves health, energy, immune system, memory and digestion.

Warning

Most people are low in minerals such as: calcium, magnesium, sulfur, phosphor, sodium, iron. In order to detoxify, you need alkaline minerals. An important role of calcium is to aid in detoxification. It is an alkaline mineral and will “catch” the toxic acids that your body releases.

If the acids can’t be “bound” because your body lacks (alkaline) minerals, the chance is high that you will feel seriously ill during your detox, that your body refuses to release the toxins (you won’t be able to lose weight, since acids and toxins are often stored in your body fat), or that your body re-absorbs the released toxins again.

Alkalize

Therefore, it’s crucial that – before or during your detox – you get plenty of alkaline water, green vegetable juice and alkalizing super foods.

You may also replenish your minerals by adding a tablespoon of spirulina, blue green algae (i.e. from the “E3 Live” brand) or wheat grass powder in your alkaline drinking water. These have highly available amino acids and minerals. And they alkalize you.

Once you’ve re-mineralized your raw food detox will be much more effective and easier for your system to handle.

Tip

You may also want to get activated zeolites or bentonite clay. The zeolites especially, are incredibly effective in attaching themselves to toxins, making them harmless and guiding them out of your body. The tiny zeolites neutralize the most toxic elements from our body such as arsenic, mercury.

Clay is much cheaper and is fine too but usually not strong enough. These zeolites will help you get rid of the toxins in an easy, safe and effective way.  Highly recommended for use during the detox. Zeolites come in a tiny bottle and are pretty expensive, but I highly recommend them when you detox.

Also, I can’t stress enough, make sure that you drink enough alkaline water during the process and that you get enough rest.

Spring, Rebirth, Renewal — Happy New Year!

Did you know that springtime is the beginning of the official new-year? Think about it, spring is the time when nature re-births and renews its self. New life develops from new budded flowers to crops peeping from the earth. What better way to celebrate the New Year and new life than by cleaning up your environment, your home, wardrobe, and don’t forget the most intimate environment of all your body.

In many cultures, through many ages, spring cleansing has become a fact of life. Throughout the winter we tend to eat a more acidic diet, such as high protein foods, which can cause the intestines to secrete a heavy mucous coating. This means the intestine is not able to absorb nutrients as well. Too much acidic food also causes the intestines to harbor harmful bacteria. These two problems can lead to constipation and auto-intoxication. This causes the intestines to re-absorb toxic materials back into the blood stream (for more information on detoxing contact naturopathic healer Nazir Avdiyah).

Once you have detoxed your body from all of the congestion, built-up toxins and give your digestion, liver and energy level a good boost and cleaning, now it’s time to add more organic fresh alkaline foods to your new clean system. During the spring there are many great alkaline fruits and vegetables to choose from. Try to choose locally grown produce,  also, shop at your local farmers markets for those items you love but are not available in your area.

In a series of recipes, I will showcase raw recipes that incorporate a spring vegetable or fruit. This week’s star is…
Asparagus
Dubbed the “food of kings” by Louis XIV of France, asparagus definitely have a royal nutritional profile. Low in fat and high in fiber, these tender stalks are a good source of iron, B vitamins, and vitamin C. Asparagus are at their peak from March through June but can be purchased year-round. Once harvested, asparagus deteriorate rapidly, so place them in cool storage to retain freshness and nutrition.

CACAO

Chocolate –in its pure form as CACAO– is actually one of the healthiest foods on the planet! Research is continually proving that Cacao is actually a superfood.

The health benefits of this wonderful superfood are not widely known. Although, everyone enjoys chocolate, people do not consume it in its raw form for the maximum benefit that they can derive from it. Raw Cacao is chocolate that has not gone through any sort of heating or processing, so all of the nutrients are still intact.

Unfortunately, the real problem today is that most chocolate has been highly processed and heated, destroying most of the nutrients. Furthermore, most chocolate today is loaded with sugars, dairy products, sodium, stabelizers, emulsifiers, preservatives, and more. Researchers have even found that commercial chocolate can be contaminated with extremely high quantities of the toxic metal lead. So, not only are the good things being taken out, bad stuff is being added, turning the cacao superfood into chocolate junk food.

For thousands of years, ancient Mayans, Aztecs and Incans have known about the amazing properties of Cacao and they used Cacao daily whether it be for meals, medicine, commerce, or religious ritual.

In fact, Cacao was held to be so sacred, that Incans used Cacao beans as money and filled their treasury holds with tons of Cacao beans.

Cacao is derived from Theobroma Cacao beans, which literally means “Food of the Gods”. Cacao contains over 300 compounds including: protein, fat, carbohydrates, fiber, iron, zinc, copper, calcium and magnesium. Magnesium helps to build strong bones and is a muscle relaxant associated with feelings of calmness. Cacao is also high in sulfur, which helps form strong nails and hair.

Cacao benefits

#1 food source of antioxidants – up to 5 times higher than the next highest source
#1 food source of magnesium – this mineral is the biggest deficiency in the Standard America Diet
Phenylethylamine (PEA) – the compound which scientists believe is released when you’re in love
Anandamide – the ‘bliss chemical’
Tryptophan – the precursor to serotonin
MAO Inhibitors – allows more serotonin to flow in your body
Appetite suppresant & aphrodisiac

None of the above statements have been evaluated by the FDA, although they told us they really love raw chocolate.

Raw living foods graces our lives…

Raw Spaghetti: zucchini noodles with nut meat sauce

The other day someone asked me about eating raw food and they said “the raw food diet”.  When I think of raw foods, I think of it as a lifestyle.  When I hear “the raw food diet”, all that comes to mind is the diet pill advertisements promising you will loose 30 pounds in in 30 days or some other unrealistic weight loss promise.  While this may be true in a small percent of the cases, it’s often been documented that those same people gain the weight back and sometimes more weight than they had before.  With Yah’some living, it is all about a lifestyle of living a healthy vibrant life with good organic foods and clean living.  I first began to think more seriously about my health and what I was eating from reading the Bible.  God or “Yah” in Hebrew provided us with an abundant of foods to nourish and heal our bodies when we are sick.   Eating raw fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and micronutrient foods was more about a spiritual awakening  and gaining health then about loosing weight.  However, in the process of my spiritual discovery and separating myself to Yah or Yahwah, I lost a great deal of weight and I continue to do so without even trying.
